So, you’re thinking about graduate school—but you’re not sure where or when to start. I’ve been there. Navigating the application process alone, I learned a lot of important lessons after the fact. My goal is to make sure that others—especially those without built-in support systems—don’t have to struggle the same way. I believe that transparency is key to increasing diversity in higher education. Contact Current and Past Students

If there's anyone who can give you an honest perspective about a lab, it's the current or former students. Don’t be afraid to reach out — email them!
When you contact them, briefly share your interest in the lab and ask specific questions. For example:

How does the PI mentor students?

How often do you meet with them?

What is the overall lab atmosphere like?

Feel free to ask anything that will help you feel comfortable about potentially joining that lab.
Also, if a PI encourages you to contact their students, that’s a major green flag.
If they don’t mention it, it’s not necessarily a red flag — but maybe a soft pink.
